gardens containing significant plantings of old roses

One of the objectives of Heritage Roses New Zealand Inc is

  • to organise visits to gardens or places of historical interest where old roses are grown

And we certainly do!  Garden rambles and bus trips to visit gardens with like-minded friends are perennially popular activities, and feature largely on our events schedule.  These visits to members' gardens that are not usually open to the public are an excellent way to learn what roses would grow well in your own gardens, and to garner ideas and wisdom from other gardeners.

As a result of another of our objectives:

  • to encourage suitable plantings of old roses in public places for the betterment of the community

there are an increasing number of community plantings cared for by our members throughout New Zealand.  These include the planting of 1,001 roses in the Dunedin Northern Cemetery, which was recognised by the World Federation of Rose Societies' Heritage Rose Group in 2009.
